Cat Care Clinic Staff Bios
Amber Carter, DVM
Dr. Carter earned degrees from both Duke University and the University of Central Florida prior to graduating from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. From the beginning of veterinary school, Dr. Carter knew she wanted to focus on cats! She was an Associate Veterinarian with Cat Care Clinic from 2007-2010 and loved working in a cat-only hospital. Life took her back home to NC but she returned to Ormond Beach in 2014 to purchase Cat Care Clinic. Dr. Carter lives with her husband Kenny (who is the Practice Manager), her two young children Cotton and August, and their three black cats: Cracker, Sioux, and Biscuit. She loves college football, seeking out good BBQ (Memphis or Eastern NC style!), listening to bluegrass and living near the beach!
Leslie Nixon, DVM, DABVP (Feline)
Former owner of Cat Care Clinic
Dr. Nixon graduated from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine (magna cum laude) in 1995 and founded Cat Care Clinic of Ormond Beach in 2000. In 2004, Dr. Nixon earned the credentials of “Board Certified Feline Specialist” as a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, making her one of only three in Florida. Dr. Nixon lives with her husband John and her two cats, Boris and Condoleeza Rice (aka Condi).
Kelsey Blackburn, DVM
Dr. Blackburn received her DVM degree from NC State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. She also graduated cum laude from Wake Forest University with honors in psychology and a double minor in biology and chemistry. After veterinary school graduation, she completed a rigorous year-long rotating internship in surgery and internal medicine at Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Charlotte, NC. Her special interests include ophthalmology and internal medicine. In her free time, she enjoys staying active, going to the beach, and cooking. She lives at home with 2 cats: April (a calico tabby) and Oliver (an orange tabby), as well as an array of exotic animals including a hedgehog, a rescued box turtle, and a corn snake.
Courtney Whelan, DVM
Dr. Whelan received her veterinary degree from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry with a concentration in Mathematics from the University of Florida. Dr. Whelan has worked since high school as a veterinary technician and has always had a special passion for cats and teaching. She has spent many years volunteering at wildlife rescues helping take care of the “big cats,” including tigers, lions, and leopards. Her veterinary interests include surgery, dentistry, and preventative medicine. Dr. Whelan enjoys boating, reading, spending time with family and friends, CrossFit, and cheering on her favorite college football teams. Dr. Whelan lives with her two cats, Pouncey and Trinity.
Jenn is one of the friendly, smiling faces you will see at the front desk! She has been a receptionist with Cat Care Clinic since 2007. She enjoys interacting with the caring clients and loves being around the quiet demeanor of cats. She lives with her two cats, EB and Sinbad. In her spare time she enjoys reading, drawing and online gaming.
Rae has been with Cat Care Clinic since the beginning! As a receptionist since 2000, Rae provides a comforting familiarity to clients both seasoned and new to the practice. She has two grown sons (Justin in FL and Ian in New Zealand) and lives with her three cats: Domino, Gidgit and Sookie. She likes to hike and travel. Ask Rae about her trip to New Zealand to visit her son!
Emily is our lead Veterinary Technician and has been with Cat Care Clinic since 2000. Emily wears many hats in the practice, acting as a technician, inventory manager and even filling in at the front desk from time to time. She loves getting to see all the breeds of cats and how unique they are. Of course, working with kittens is her favorite part of the job. She lives with her husband Kris, her children Hunter and Eva, their dog Moto and four cats: Wobbles (a special needs kitty who has Cerebellar Hypoplasia), Rogue, Wesley and Gizmo. She enjoys camping and riding her 4-wheeler.
Jenn has been with Cat Care Clinic since 2007. As a Veterinary Technician, Jenn is also our primary surgery technician and is very skilled at anesthesia monitoring and taking dental x-rays. She enjoys Cat Care Clinic because of the high quality medicine that is practiced. She has a teenage daughter and lives with her two cats, Spike and Echo, and her dog Sally. Jenn is always working on a home improvement project such as painting or yard work.
Elizabeth graduated from the Florida Institute of Animal Arts and joined us as a Veterinary Technician in 2012. She is a cat-person (like the rest of us!) so she naturally fits right in here! She and her husband Mark have four cats: Snickers, Snowball, Midnight and Garfield. She enjoys riding her bike and working on arts & crafts.
Cora joined us in early 2016, moving to Florida from Bluffton, SC with her 3 children, husband and 3 fur children. She has worked in the veterinary field since 2007 and as a veterinary technician since 2009. Caring for animals is only one of her many passions. She has a BFA in photography from SCAD, entertains children as “Funny Bunny the Clown,” teaches Zumba Fitness classes and has a passion for natural health and wellness. She enjoys kayaking and spending precious time with her family outdoors.
Laine has been in the animal field since 1991, working in shelters, emergency facilities, zoos and private practice. In her 11 years as a zookeeper she had her hands on some of the largest (tigers) and smallest (black footed) cats in the world. She is currently working on her Bachelor of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology with a goal of gaining more knowledge to help her animal true love – cats! She shares her home with her husband, Rick and two daughters Ethereal and Saebre’. The house is ruled by two kitty sisters: Shadow and Marshmallow and the newest addition Sebastian (rescued as a stray kitten from Cat Care Clinic).
Jessica is one of our veterinary technicians and started working with us in 2017. She is currently attending St. Petersburg College and is in the Veterinary Technician program. Jessica gets her cat-fix at work because her husband is, unfortunately, allergic to cats! She does have two dogs, a Golden Retriever and a Dachshund that she loves to take to the beach. In her free time she volunteers at the Marine Science Center in the Turtle Rehab hospital. She also participates in “washback patrol” to watch for newly hatched sea turtles that get blown back to shore and can’t make it to the ocean.
Kristen is our other smiling kennel assistant. She is originally from Michigan but moved to Florida to escape the cold! She is an all-around animal lover and actually has a degree in Equine Science! Her animal family includes two horses, two dogs and, of course, five cats (Jaime, Rascal, Boo, Maltie and Sharky). She enjoys training and riding her horses, taking her dogs to the beach, art and writing.
Kenny is our “behind the scenes” Practice Manager who keeps Cat Care Clinic running smoothly! He and Dr. Carter purchased the practice in 2015, leaving his corporate life behind. He will tell you, though, that his most important (and favorite) job is being a father to their son Cotton and daughter August! Kenny is a graduate of N.C. State University (BS in Business Administration), and is a huge fan of Wolfpack athletics, motorcycle racing, real food, BBQ and IPAs. He enjoys both kinds of music: Country and Western.
Milicia is one of our newest veterinary technicians, having moved to FL from Vermont. She’s been an animal lover since childhood, with cats being her favorite! Milicia is a former police officer, having worked in Animal Control with the sheriff’s department. She lives with her husband Eric and four children (Ryan, Taylor, Matthew and Erica). She has five cats: Lincoln, Ebony, Gizmo, Rascal and Nugget, whom she adopted as a tiny stray from Cat Care Clinic.
